Why State shouldn’t have new Assembly bldg complex, HC asks petitioner

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday asked the petitioners as to why a new Assembly building should not be constructed in a new State like Telangana, which was formed after a prolonged struggle. The Court also pointed out to the petitioner that new Assembly buildings were being constructed in several States in the country.

The HC posed this question while hearing the petitions filed by different people opposing the decision of the State government to demolish the Erra Manzil heritage building to build a new Assembly building complex. Responding to the question raised by the High Court, the petitioners submitted to the Court that they didn’t have any objection if the State government builds Assembly building in an open place and added that they were opposed to the decision of the State government to demolish the Erra Manzil heritage building.

Following this, the HC asked the HMDA counsel if it had powers to demolish a heritage structure and adjourned the case to Thursday. (NSS)
