Women’s Day: Free access for women at all monuments on March 8

Women visitors, both foreign and Indian, will be permitted free access to all monuments maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India on March 8 to commemorate International Women’s Day, according to an announcement issued by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The press release from the department reads: In an office exercise of the powers conferred under Rule 6 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959, the Director-General, Archaeological Survey of India has instructed that no fee shall be charged from women visitors (both domestic and foreign) at all ticketed Centrally protected monuments / Archaeological Sites & Remains specified in the Second Schedule of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules.

Monuments such as Hyderabad’s Golconda Fort and Charminar will be free for all female tourists, domestic or foreign. The decision was made in accordance with India’s culture of “giving respect to women.”

Under the ASI, the Union government protects 3,691 monuments.
