2.1 magnitude earthquake hits Delhi

The national capital was hit with a low-intensity earthquake this afternoon. The incident was reported in Punjabi Bagh of New Delhi on Sunday.

As per the National Centre of Seismology, the earthquake had a magnitude of 2.1 on the Richter scale with a depth of 7 km from the ground surface. The tremors were felt at 12.01 pm, less than 24 hours following similar tremors being felt in Northeastern India.

The Delhi seismic activity reported no immediate case of loss of life or property. The city comes under the fourth zone of the 5 seismic zones of India. Though it has rarely ever been the epicentre of an earthquake, Delhi does experience tremors even when earthquakes hit Central Asia or in the Himalayan range- both of which are high seismic zones.

Soon after a powerful earthquake measuring 6.3 was reported in Tajikistan, the national capital felt the aftermath with strong tremors in and surrounding the city. The tremors lasted for several seconds despite the epicentre being 1,200 km away from it.

Amongst the major earthquakes reported near the city, the highest was in western Uttar Pradesh- with magnitude 6.7 at Bulandshahr on October 10th, 1956 and magnitude 5.8 at Moradabad on August 15th, 1966.

Assam witnessed its 5th tremor in the last 24 hours with an earthquake measuring 4.2 in the wee hours of Saturday. With an epicentre near Tezpur, the National Centre for Seismology’s report said the latest quake was reported at 1.07 am at a depth of 30 km. This was near the headquarter of Sonitpur district.
