2.99 kg gold bars seized from air passenger at Shamshabad

Hyderabad: The Customs officials in the early hours seized 26 gold bars weighing 2,992 gram worth Rs 1.11 crore from an air passenger at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport early on Sunday.

The passenger, who had arrived by a flight from Sharjah in the UAE was carrying the gold bars without disclosing and paying taxes. On a tip-off that a passenger from Sharjah was carrying gold bars to Hyderabad, the Customs officials kept a strict vigil. As soon as the flight landed at Shamshabad, on seeing the Customs officials frisking the passengers, the accused got alerted and threw the gold bars in a toilet in the airport and returned.

The Customs officials found no gold with the accused on frisking him and checking his baggage. However, the officials took him into custody and questioned severely. The accused blurted the truth that he had thrown gold bars in the airport toilet. The sleuths seized the gold bars and registered a case. (NSS)
