68 MLAs Receive Income Tax Notices 

Amidst the 2020 Bihar Assembly polls, the Income Tax Department has served notice to 68 MLAs who had submitted wrong information.

Many MLAs Submitted Wrong Affidavits 

An official from the department informed that many of the MLAs have submitted wrong affidavits regarding their movable and immovable assets at the time of filing for the nomination to the Election Commission.

Some of them have even mentioned the source of earning in the income tax returns but not in the affidavit. While some of them have not mentioned their PAN cards and bank details in the affidavits.

The official added that they have served notice to 68 legislators of Bihar who were elected after the 2020 assembly election. They had reportedly hidden their properties or the source of earning. Or there was a mismatch in the income tax returns and affidavits. They have been directed to reply by November 30.

He further added that following the replies of the legislators, the following investigation will be conducted and the reports will be submitted to the Election Commission. After taking in the recommendation of the poll body, they will take further action.

Tax Refunds Issued For More Than 64 Lakh Cases 

This comes after more than 2.38 crores tax returns have been filed for 2020-21 fiscal so far. The IT department on Tuesday said informed that out of this, over 1.68 crore income tax returns have been processed. Refunds have also been issued for more than 64 lakhs.

They have also urged the taxpayers to file their ITRs for 2020-21 fiscal on the e-filing portal. The government has further extended the due date to December 31.
