After Virat Kohli’s daughter receives rape threats, Delhi women commission seeks immediate probe

After the Indian cricket team captain’s daughter received rape threats on social media following India’s defeat at the T20 World Cup, the Delhi Commission for Women has stepped in. The body has directed the Delhi Police to furnish the details of the accused and his arrest in the online threatening case.

Calling it “very shameful”, the Chairperson of the committee, Swati Maliwal, lashed out at the unidentified people who threatened the mere nine-month-old girl child of Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma.

The DCW chief urged the city police to take immediate action in the case and share the details of the investigation. In her tweet, she reminded how the team has won accolades in the past for India yet is being treated in this way after losing just one match.

“The team has made us proud thousands of times, why this silliness in defeat,” Ms Maliwal wrote.

Information pertaining to the accused identified, arrested, a first information report (FIR) of the case, a thorough “action taken report” and more has been sought by the committee from the Delhi Police.

The DCW issued the directions through a notice sent out today, which also read, “If no accused has been arrested, please provide the details of steps taken by Delhi Police to arrest the accused,” further asking for the same to be submitted by November 8th

The sequence of events started after Virat Kohli received rape threats for his baby daughter Vamishka shortly after India lost to Pakistan in the ongoing World Cup series. Previously, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the former Indian cricket team captain, had also received rape threats for his daughter post losing a match.

The threats to Mr Kohli increased after he came out in support of fellow teammate Mohammed Shami after he was trolled and bullied vehemently for his religion following the defeat. Mr Shami was slurred at and called pathetic names in his Instagram post’s comments section.

Slamming the trollers, Virat Kohli said, “Attacking someone over their religion is the most pathetic thing one can do as a human. That is a very sacred and personal thing. People take out their frustration because they have no understanding of what we do.” The statement was made during a press conference ahead of the match where India was due to play against New Zealand in the T20 tour in Dubai.
