Annapurna Food Scheme achieves new milestone by serving over 10 crore meals

Since its inception in 2014, the Telangana government’s subsidized meal program, Annapurna Food Scheme, which serves hot and hygienic meals for Rs 5, has achieved a new milestone by serving over 10.22 crore people.

This scheme is one of the biggest public feeding programs in the country, and it was fueled by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s vision that no one should go hungry.

The Annapurna Canteens began with eight locations and quickly became a boon for the poor, prompting the Telangana government to increase the number of canteens to 150 within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits.

According to the GHMC, Rs 198.43 crore was spent and 10.22 crore people were served meals between March 2014 and November 2022.

The civic body in charge of the scheme has been working on improving the food service. As part of this exercise, eight Annapurna canteens were outfitted with seating and shelters on a trial basis, making dining more comfortable.

These canteens have seating arrangements in Langar Houz, Tolichowk, Kothapet, Madhapur, and Kukatpally, among other places.

Every day, the Annapurna canteens run by the GHMC in collaboration with the Hare Krishna Movement Charitable Trust serve approximately 45,000 meals consisting of rice, sambar, curry, and pickle.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, these meals were a boon to the poor, and the Telangana government, in addition to the 150 Annapurna canteens, established an additional 373 centres and 259 mobile canteens to serve the free of cost. Over 2.29 crore meals were served in 2020-21.

The Annapurna meals are served for Rs 5 during the afternoon at 17 major government hospitals within the GHMC limits, and the GHMC has set a target of serving 80,000 meals per day in these locations. “The plan is to serve meals three times a day at 17 government hospitals,” said a GHMC official.
