Army officer: Terrorists in J&K use youth to carry out grenade attacks

Terrorists are using young people to carry out grenade attacks in populated areas of Kashmir since their networks are unable to carry out large-scale operations on security personnel, a top Army officer said on Tuesday.

Lieutenant General D P Pandey, the General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, made the comment in the aftermath of a grenade attack on Sunday at the Hari Singh High Street market in Srinagar, which killed two people and injured 34 others.

Speaking to media on the sidelines of an International Women’s Day event in Srinagar, he urged people to unite against terror networks in order to put an end to such incidents.

It was a really cowardly act, in which women and men were going about their regular business and shopping, and you toss a grenade, killing two people and injuring many more. I think it is condemnable, he said when questioned about the attack at the market.

Having realised that they are unable to make a significant difference to security parameters, the people who are propagating and the nexus that is attempting to push terrorism in Kashmir are using so-called hybrid terrorists, young men, to throw grenades, particularly in populated areas, the lieutenant general said.

He added that such grenade attacks or such thoughtless killings can only be controlled when society wakes up against the nexus.

Lt Gen Pandey stated that the situation along the Line of Control (LoC) is “absolutely good” with the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan completing a year.

“It’s absolutely good. People are going about their daily lives. I think it’s a fantastic thing that’s happened, especially for the people of border areas like Uri, Keran, and Tangdhar who were suffering as a result of ceasefire violations” he stated.

According to the commander, the enemy used to specifically attack buildings, residences, schools, and farms on this side.
