Bajrang Dal opposes Valentine’s Day celebrations in Hyderabad

As per the latest reports, Bajrang Dal has again opposed Valentine’s Day celebrations and has urged all city businesses not to participate.

On Saturday, Bajrang Dal activists protested against the practice of celebrating Valentine’s Day in Hyderabad

A press release from Bajrang Dal district convener Puneeth Attavar said that India has a distinct culture. Western culture has been attacking Indian culture and, as a result, attracting the younger generation towards it.

Activists gathered at the Abids Road intersection and burned an effigy as well as Valentine’s Day greeting cards. They criticized the practice, referring to it as “western culture,” and urged people not to celebrate it.

Around 50 people took part in the protest, and they asked people to observe “Shaheed Diwas” to commemorate the Pulwama attack.

According to the organization, similar protests will be held across the state on February 14.

Protests staged by Bajrang Dal against Valentine’s day in past years

Bajrang Dal, which is mostly comprised of youths, is a group known for its opposition to Valentine’s Day year after year.

Similarly, in 2021, the Bajrang Dal staged protests against Valentine’s Day celebrations in Hyderabad, chanting slogans and burning greeting cards.

In 2020, Bajrang Dal, wearing saffron scarves around their necks, vandalized Hyderabad’s IT hub Kondapur area on Valentine’s day. They were seen shouting “Band karo, band karo, Valentine’s day band karo! (Stop Valentine’s Day)” inside a restaurant as they burst the red balloons meant for decoration in a video shared on Twitter. They climbed on chairs, removing and bursting the balloons from the ceiling. One of them also tore a placard that was placed on a table.

The group had also committed vandalism at the Inorbit mall in Hyderabad. A couple of videos show the same men arguing with mall employees who are trying to prevent them from raising slogans and destroying the mall’s property.
