The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), formerly known as the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), has been granted official recognition by the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of parliament. This recognition occurred when the party changed its name and stated its goal to expand its political footprint beyond Telangana and into national politics.
The TRS general body, led by its President and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, decided to alter the party’s name from TRS to BRS on October 5, the previous year. The party seeks a new identity in order to play a larger role in defining India’s political environment. The Election Commission of India granted the party’s request to change its name in December.
Following the metamorphosis into BRS, the party leadership worked hard to ensure that the new name was recognised by both the Rajya Sabha (the upper house) and the Lok Sabha (the lower house). BRS senior leader K Keshava Rao wrote to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar, while BRS Lok Sabha floor leader Nama Nageswara Rao wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, seeking that the party’s new name be recognised as ‘BRS’.
On June 8, the Rajya Sabha approved the name change, recognising the party as the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. Following that, on Tuesday, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a formal circular sanctioning the name change from Telangana Rashtra Samithi to Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The circular also contained the names of nine of the party’s Lok Sabha MPs.
With this accreditation, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi can now formally operate in the Lok Sabha under its new name, allowing the party to further its political programme and participate in national legislative proceedings.
