Bharti Singh and husband accept use of drugs, couple arrested

Following the arrest of comedian Bharti Singh over the alleged possession and consumption of banned substances, now her husband, Haarsh Limbachiyaa has also been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). While his wife was arrested on Saturday, Mr. Limbachiyaa was taken into custody on Sunday morning.

The arrest came after 15 hours of interrogation of the screenwriter, producer and comedian.

The couple’s Andheri home was raided on Saturday by the NCB after finding their names in the client list of a drug peddler.

After the search, officials said they found a “small quantity of cannabis”, weighing 86.5gms from the 33 year old and his comedian wife’s apartment in Mumbai. The couple were then taken to the anti-drug agency’s office for questioning.

The duo, according to the officers of NCB, gave in during the interrogation and accepted that they consume marijuana, after which, Bharti Singh was arrested under the NDPS act of 1986.

The NCB’s released statement read, “Both Bharti Singh and her husband Haarsh Limbachiyaa accepted consuming ganja. Ms Singh was placed under arrest under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1986.”

Officials said that although the quantity of banned substances retrieved from Ms. Singh’s home did not meet the commercial measurements, they could still be given imprisonment for upto 10 years.

The anti-drugs agency also raided 2 other places in Mumbai on Saturday.

There has been an uneasy silence in the Bollywood since the death of Sushant Singh Rajput brought the alleged drugs consumption case in the film industry at the forefront.

The Whatsapp messages found in Rhea Chakraborty’s phone regarding purchase of drugs for the late actor gained the attention of the NCB. After this, many popular faces of the industry were asked to summon for questioning, including Deepika Padukone, Shraddha Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan and Rakulpreet Singh.

The measures were adopted to unravel the maze of drug use in Bollywood.

Earlier this month, actor Arjun Rampal and his girlfriend were called in by the NCB for interrogation following a raid in their Mumbai home. The officials had discovered some substance which the actor claimed to be a prescribed medication.

While coming out of the agency office after 6 hours of questioning, Mr. Rampal said that he has “nothing to do with drugs” and that the prescription for the medicine found at his home were handed over to the agency.

His girlfriend, Ms. Gabriella, was questioned for 2 days, each session lasting for 6 hours. Her brother was earlier arrested in the drugs case and is currently in the agency’s custody. Through the South African national, the NCB arrested a specific Paul, an Australian architect, who was told to be a drug supplier. However, he is out on bail currently.

Prior to this, the NCB had also raided the house of Firoz Nadiadwala. Though they asked him to summon, he allegedly did not. His wife, Ms. Saeed was also interrogated as she was in the clients’ list of one drug peddler the agency had arrested.

She got bail on the same day.
