BJP’s No-Confidence Move Against Nizamabad Mayor

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is apparently arranging a no-confidence petition against D Neetu Kiran, the incumbent mayor of Nizamabad Municipal Corporation (NMC). With 28 corporators at its disposal, the BJP hopes to end the BRS-AIMIM coalition’s dominance of the NMC.

The political play comes after BJP candidate Dhanpal Suryanarayana won the Nizamabad Urban seat in the 2017 Assembly elections. This victory prompted negotiations between BJP corporators and seven others who had previously switched to BRS.

While four corporators have returned to the BJP, the party is actively chasing the remaining three, as well as courting BRS corporators in an attempt to change their allegiance.

Despite finishing third in the 2020 corporate elections, the BRS, backed by AIMIM and ex-officio members, presently retains the majority in the Nizamabad Municipal corporate. According to insiders, the BJP’s campaign for a no-confidence resolution is an attempt to enhance its position in the Nizamabad Urban constituency and increase its vote share in the 2018 Lok Sabha elections.

The Nizamabad Municipal body, the third-largest municipal body in the state after Hyderabad and Warangal, has 60 seats. The present makeup consists of 28 BJP corporators, 16 from AIMIM, and 13 from BRS, with one corporator elected independently. The political dynamics in Nizamabad are being keenly monitored as the BJP attempts to contest and maybe shift the balance of power in the municipal body.
