BJP’s push for ‘Uniform Divorce Law, A sinister move to target minorities

After getting the nod for implementation of Triple Talaq Bill and construction of the temple at Babri Masjid site one after another, the BJP made another sinister move to realize ‘uniform civil code’ in the country by filing a PIL in Supreme Court on Monday wrapping it under the demand of ‘uniform grounds of divorce law’ for all citizens.

BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, who filed the petition, sought directions from the SC to the Centre asking to remove anomalies in divorce laws and make them uniform for all citizens irrespective of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth.

In his PIL he said, the Court declares that the discriminatory grounds of divorce are violative to Articles 14,15, 21 and frame guidelines for ‘Uniform Grounds of Divorce’ for all citizens.

Asking the court to direct the Law Commission to examine the laws of divorce & suggest ‘Uniform Grounds of Divorce’ for all citizens in spirit of Articles 14, 15, 44 within 3 months, the BJP Leader urge the apex body to consider international laws and international conventions without specifying the accounts of the events.

Condemning the surreptitious move of BJP to destabilize the democratic structure of the country by sneaking into sensitive issues of religious minorities, the All India Majlid Inquilab-e-Millat (AIMIM) said, “The PIL filed by the saffron party is a part of wider conspiracy to water down the spirit of the pluralistic culture of the country.”

“PIL seeking uniform grounds of divorce for all citizens is a long drawn strategy to deny minorities their rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Sneaking into sensitive issues of religious minorities is a part of a wider conspiracy to dilute the pluralistic spirit and ethos of the Country,” said Moulana Syed Tariq Quadri, President All India Majlis-e-Inquilaab-e-Millat (AIMIM).

Terming the PIL a hysterical attempt to divert public attention from development issues he said “The BJP government has miserably failed in structuring a uniform policy of employment throughout the country preferring locals though it has scrapped article 370 with a declared intention of bringing uniformity throughout the country.”

Terming the BJP’s move as an old shibboleth of RSS, Osman Al-Hajri, a senior leader Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), said “With this, they have displayed their ‘morbid melancholia’ created out of hysteria about the Muslim population in India. The PIL is nothing but RSS’s old shibboleth and a dragnet directed towards a specific minority community of the country who always stood against the saffron brigade’s power-thirsty ambitions ever since its inception. They would come up with fusillades of false and travestying records to prove their apprehensions more accurate and utter concerning,” he explained.
