Canadian PM Justin Trudeau struggling for a third term; hopes not high

Justin Trudeau is seemingly having a hard time retaining his position as the Prime Minister of Canada in the upcoming elections. He had to face the angry mob protesting against him during his campaigns with extreme instances of a man even hurling stones at him.

The polls, which are less than 2 weeks away, took an ugly turn for the PM after his August 15’s announcement. He had an upper hand compared to Conversative leader Erin O’Toole weeks back when he first called for the elections. However, since then, the 49-year-old does not seem to charm Canadians enough to get their votes and continue for the third term.

When he was leaving from an event in London, Ontario, Mr Trudeau came face to face with protestors calling him out over the mandatory covid vaccinations announcement and other such measures to stay protected in the crisis.

A clip broadcasted on the TV showed someone throwing a stone at the PM. Though no was got injured in the mess, Mr Trudeau confirmed on Tuesday that he had “felt some of that gravel”.

He said some of the protestors in the crowd “were practically foaming at the mouth, they were so mad at me… It is absolutely unacceptable that people (would) be throwing things and endangering others at a political rally.”

The recent events could elevate his opponents O’Toole and New Democratic Party’s leader Jagmeet Singh in the vote bank.

Late on Monday, O’Toole tweeted saying, “Political violence is never justified,” while Singh said it is “not acceptable to throw objects at anyone” or “intimidate people who don’t agree with you”.

The Prime Minister received tons of questions over time regarding the backlash he is facing. Protestors also made racial and misogynist slurs at him. Mr Trudeau called them “anti-vaxxer mobs” and “a small fringe element in this country that is angry, that doesn’t believe in science.”

As per a Nanos survey, Trudeau’s Liberals stand with 34 per cent votes while Tories come trailing behind with 32 per cent. This small margin is being defined as a difference within the poll’s error marks.

While hospitals are struggling with the sudden spike in covid cases, mobs are going around scribbling walls and political signboards with graffiti. The PM, however, has pledged not to let the “fringe” groups “dictate how this country gets through this pandemic.”
