Centre’s bias against Telangana continues to show in awarding railway lines

Every time Telangana has claimed that the Centre was biased in awarding new railway lines or extending more projects to the state, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders and ministers have denied it.

Some even made announcements, such as the development of the Secunderabad Railway Station or the sanctioning of a Vande Bharat Express from the state. Even these have made little progress thus far.

But now, figures from the Reserve Bank of India’s latest Handbook of Statistics on Indian States confirm that Telangana leaders have been speaking the truth since 2014.

According to RBI data, the Centre has approved 1,871 kilometers of rail lines in the state in 2021. This may appear to be significant, but it is not when compared to what other states have. Uttar Pradesh, which is a BJP-ruled State, received 8,799 kilometers, while Maharashtra received 5,823 kilometers and Gujarat received 5,327 kilometers. Madhya Pradesh received 5,140 km, while Karnataka received 3,572 km.

It is crucial to mention that even a smaller state than Telangana, Jharkhand, has received more railway lines in seven years. Jharkhand received 2,182 km in 2014, 2,294 km in 2015, 2,394 km in 2016, and 2,455 km in 2017, with 2,573 km being allotted in 2021.

Telangana, on the other hand, received 1,753 km in 2014, 1,676 km in 2015, and 1,737 km in 2016, with figures never exceeding 2,000 km in seven years. It got 1,828 km in 2020 and 1,871 km in 2021.

It is worth noting that neighboring Andhra Pradesh has been allocated 3,965 kilometers by 2021.

In fact, the 151-kilometer Kothapalli-Manoharabad railway line is the only major project to have begun in the new State since its inception. The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2024. The South Central Railway’s 54.1-kilometer new railway line between Kothagudem and Sathupalli, built in collaboration with the Singareni Collieries Company Ltd at a cost of Rs 927.94 crore, is the only one completed in the last five years.

Aside from that, it is now well known that the promises made in the AP Reorganisation Act, such as the Railways examining the feasibility of establishing a rail coach factory in Telangana and improving rail connectivity in the State, are still on paper, with projects that were supposed to come here instead going to other BJP-ruled states.
