Chlorhexidine mouthwash can kill coronavirus

Hyderabad: A preliminary laboratory-based research conducted by Dr. HSJ Institute of Dental Sciences, Panjab University in collaboration with CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) has revealed that one of the most routinely used mouth wash is effective to fight against Covid-19.

The study titled “Chlorhexidine: An effective anti-Covid mouth rinse” was supported by Dr.Reddy’s laboratories and by Design Innovation Centre, Punjab University.

The Chlorhexidine study has reviled that Covid-19 colonizes in the oral and nasal cavities. Mouthwash can be an effective way to reduce colonization and possibly reduce the transmission of infection. People have become more conscious about oral hygiene to prevent Covid-19.

Chlorhexidine is a gold standard mouthwash due to its bactericidal and virucidal properties. This study was aimed at providing the effectiveness of Chlorhexidine against Covid-19, through analysis in a laboratory.

During the tests, it was observed that Chlorhexidine digluconate mouthwash in 0.2% concentration kills more than 99.9 percent of the Covid-19 virus in just 30 seconds.
Dr. Ashish Jain from Dr. HSJ Institute of Dental Sciences said “Our study revealed that a mouthwash with the required concentration of Chlorhexidine killed Covid-19 within 30 seconds after being exposed in a laboratory. These are the initial results from the lab studies and need to be verified through clinical studies. We are indeed grateful to Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories and Design Innovation Centre, Panjab University for providing support in conducting this preliminary study successfully.
