City Traffic Cops’ measures bring down fatal Road Mishaps

Hyderabad: As there has been explosion of vehicle population in the capital city coupled with development of good infrastructure and Hyderabad being a major IT hub resulting in accelerated growth of vehicles, the Hyderabad Traffic Police has taken many measures to ensure the smooth flow of 61.48 lakh vehicles as on June 30 both in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy District. The city Traffic Police has been successful in reducing fatal accidents by 12% and bringing down deaths by 10% in first half of the year. The following measures have resulted in achieving this goal.

Enforcement against drunken driving: the enforcement was aimed to check road accidents by drunken drivers by keeping a strict vigil on them. Each drunken driver was being counseled in the presence of their parents/spouse/guardian at TTI Goshamahal and TTI Begumpet. The special drive by the Hyderabad Traffic Police has contributed tremendously in reducing the road fatalities.

With the use of technology and high-end gadgets, evidence based booking of violations; the rate of convictions against violators has increased.

Enforcement against life endangering violations: The enforcement against specific violations, which endanger lives of the violator as well as other road users was being carried out for the safety of citizens. Special drives are conducted on regular intervals to curb these violations. From engineering side various measures were taken to reduce road accidents and to ensure seamless and hassle-free traffic flow at all important junctions by enforcing free lefts, putting various types of signages, central median alignments, footpath development with railing and so on.

The initiative of the Traffic Police was to reduce fatal and non-fatal road accidents on city roads. After identifying 85 accident-prone areas, the Traffoc cops studied the causes and took up various re-engineering works and remedial measures. Re-engineering measures taken at various places and encouraging pedestrians by erecting signages and providing railing on central median to cross the road by using foot over bridges, pedestrian deaths reduced by 16% compared to last year. Further, 50 black spots have been identified and efforts were being made to take remedial measures to rectify the black spots and reduce road accidents. (NSS)
