Congress Misses Mark as BJP Emerges as the Single-Largest Party

New Delhi: As the trends are rolling in from polling centers, the BJP is emerging as the single-largest party in the state however the Congress is unsuccessful in replicating its 2015 performance of 27 seats and the Mahagathbandhan is behind the NDA.

Congress heads say while it’s a bit early to say anything on the result of counting trends yet the BJP is more comfortable on seats battled by the Congress. Furthermore, the RJD in spite of being famous, couldn’t get the popular votes according to trends till 12 noon.

Congress heads believe that though the party contested on 70 seats yet they were difficult contests as on these seats the BJP had a powerful presence. The RJD conceded those seats which were either strong BJP bastions or were urban seats.

More than 7,29,27,396 voters were qualified to vote in Bihar polls and the voter turnout was at 57.05 percent, which was 0.39 percent more when compared with 56.66 percent in 2015 elections.

According to trends, at 12 noon the BJP is emerging as the single-largest party with 73 seats. While the RJD is ahead at 57 seats, the JDU at 51 and the Congress at 21 seats.

Bihar voted for the 243-member Assembly in three phases – October 28, November 3 and November 7.

The RJD had gained 80 seats in the 2015 Assembly polls, while the JD(U) gained 71 seats. The BJP had gained 53 seats and the LJP managed to gain two seats.

The Bihar election is being viewed as a referendum on Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose JD(U) is in alliance with the BJP-drove NDA. Nitish Kumar has governed Bihar thrice in succession since 2005.

The counting of votes cast in the Bihar Assembly elections was started on Tuesday morning. The three-term incumbent Nitish Kumar, aged 69, and his 30-year-old challenger, Tejashwi Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal, are the major competitors for the chief ministerial chair. However, a few other prominent faces are likewise vying for a seat in the state assembly.
