Conjoined Twins Delivered at Home, Family Seeks Help for Operation

In Lakhimpur Kheri, a Dalit family has requested for financial assistance from the state government as well as individuals to help them separate a pair of conjoined twins that were born at home on Thursday.

Ram Kumar Gautam, the father of the babies, works as a daily wage labourer.

The doctors are surprised that the twins had safe home delivery in Lakhimpur.

Dr S K Sachan told that: “We are surprised that the conjoined twins have survived in a home delivery which is rare keeping in mind the complications in such cases.”

According to medical experts, the twins are omphalopagus. Which means that are joined near the belly button and commonly the survival rate in such cases is usually between 5 to 20 per cent. In this case, twins generally share a liver but some share the lower part of the small intestine and colon.

Usually, conjoined babies require surgical delivery by caesarean section due to their anatomy, but in this case. The babies were born through normal delivery in Danduri village on Thursday.

On Friday morning, the baby girls were taken to a (CHC) Community Health Centre by their father. Where the staff told the father that the girls were healthy.

For further medical tests, the twins have been referred to a higher centre in Lucknow

Dr Manoj Agarwal The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) told the reporters that the conjoined twins have a high mortality rate and the birth of the baby girls was a rare case of survival. “We will check the possibility of treatment of the babies,” he told.

Nindara the mother of the baby’s told that she was worried about the future of her daughters. She told that: “They might need treatment at some point to lead a normal life. I hope we can get some support from the authorities,”
