CPI welcomes Supreme Court verdict on CBI row

Hyderabad: CPI national general secretary S Sudhakar Reddy today welcomed the Supreme Court’s interim order restraining the new CBI director from taking any policy decision. He blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for midnight purge with regard to CBI and its officials.

In a statement here today, the CPI leader appreciated that the apex court put a tab on the new CBI chief and appointing a retired judge Justice A K Patnaik to supervise the CVC probe into the allegations against the director and special director of the prime investigating agency. The order in a way was a blow to the RSS-controlled BJP government led by Narendra Modi, which was doing everything to control and dictate terms that suits it, he said.

As soon as director Alok Verma approached the apex court, the Modi government in order to save its skin got the CBI to announce that both the director and special director were not removed but will be out during the course of inquiry. From the very beginning, the NDA government under Narendra Modi has been blatantly interfering with the working of CBI.

It may be recalled here that just two days before the retirement of former director Dutta, the second in commandment was abruptly transferred. Immediately after the director’s retirement, Rakesh Asthana, said to be a confident of Amit Shah, was appointed as director in 2017. When this was challenged, Verma was made director and Asthana special director. Though Verma has written about his allegations on Rakesh Asthana to CVC, no action has been taken, he said. The entire episode centers around attempts to save Asthana. The CPI accused the Prime Minister of being responsible for the whole mess and urged him to accept his blunders, rather than putting the nation to shame. (NSS)
