Criminal History of Telangana MLAs

A research released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Telangana Election Watch discloses troubling information regarding the criminal history of Telangana’s incumbent MLAs.

The research was based on the candidates’ affidavits provided prior to the 2018 Assembly elections and by-elections. The following are some of the report’s significant findings:

  • 72 (61%) of the 118 sitting MLAs studied have announced criminal charges against themselves, while 46 (39%) have declared severe criminal cases.
  • Seven MLAs have declared attempted murder charges under IPC section 307, and four MLAs have declared crimes against women cases.
  • One MLA has declared a rape complaint under IPC Section 376.
  • 59 (58%) of the governing Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLAs have announced criminal charges against them.
  • Six out of seven AIMIM MLAs have declared criminal charges, as have four out of six Congress MLAs, two BJP MLAs, and one Independent MLA.
  • 38 (38%) of the BRS MLAs have announced serious criminal charges against themselves. In comparison, two of the seven AIMIM legislators, three of the six Congress legislators, two BJP legislators, and one Independent legislator had announced severe criminal charges.
