Delhi CM’s daughter falls prey to Cyber crime, loses Rs 34000 to scammers

Harshita Kejriwal, the Delhi CM’s daughter has recently reported a cyber theft of Rs. 34000 in which she was duped through QR code.

She has reported that she was actually trying to sell a sofa set online through digital resale platform OLX where a person who appeared to be a buyer sent her a QR code which the buyer asked her to scan so as to receive the agreed amount. However, when she scanned the QR to carry out the transaction, instead of getting credit, her account got debited by Rs 34,000 through two transactions. The first installment was of Rs 20,000 and the second was of Rs 14,000.

To establish authenticity and trust, the cyber scammer first sent her a small amount in her account after which she did not suspect any fraud from the same.

Harshita Kejriwal who is the eldest of the two children of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal graduated in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology DELHI (IIT-D).

She first came into highlight when she scored a massive 96% in CBSE class 12th board exams in 2014.

The complaint for the same was lodged in the Civil Lines Police Station which is the closest station near the CM Residence. The police authorities have promised to catch the alleged anyhow.

The police cyber-crime cell told the public about how such scammers operate. The modus operandi of the operation works upon the bait entrustment method. The online scammers first send a QR code to the target scanning which they first receive a small amount which puts the mentality of fraud away. After this then the fraudster sends another QR code scanning which the victim’s account gets debited with the desired amount and no contact remains following the same.

The Delhi police cyber cell advised the commoners to stay alert from such fraud attempts and to entrust payments to known accounts only.
