Diabetes May Complicate Covid 19 Symptoms; Doctor Suggests Health Maintenance

A recent study by a Diabetes Management Platform observed that more than three-fourths of people who were managing diabetes noted fluctuations in their blood glucose level after they were diagnosed with Covid 19.

Multiple Health Concerns To Remain During Covid Recovery 

As per the survey conducted by the platform to understand the impact of Covid 19 on diabetes patients, they noted that up to three months, the blood glucose level was found to have increased. During the first month, it increased by 28%. In the second it was up by 17 percent and 11 percent by the third month.

BeatO (diabetes management platform) conducted a survey of over 800 people and said that almost 62 percent of people observed changes in their weight after Covid 19. Around 37 percent experienced fluctuating blood pressure levels. Along with weakness, body ache and fatigue during the recovery period post-Covid 19.

Mudit Sabharwal, Consultant Diabetologist and the Head of Medical Affairs at BeatO spoke to the media about diabetes management during Covid 19. He said that people with chronic diseases are at a higher risk of Covid 19 and the complication that might come with it, especially if their health is not managed properly. He noted that people who already had diabetes and contracted Covid 19 were also vulnerable to multiple complications like pneumonia.

Furthermore, diabetes affects the immune system of the patient which makes them even more vulnerable to the virus. And this virus has the tendency to thrive in an environment of elevated blood glucose.

Diabetologist Suggests Ways To Maintain Diabetes During Covid 19

Further talking about maintaining diabetes during Covid 19, Sabharwal said it is important to frequently check the blood glucose levels especially if the patient is on insulin. At the same time, it is also important to keep themselves hydrated and increase the need for fluids in the body. The patient must also keep track of what they eat, fasting might make things worse.

In case the blood glucose drops immediately, the patient must access something sweet to eat. Exercising regularly and having a nice sleep at night is also equally important.
