Discrimination against Telangana continues as WHO GCTM shifted to Gujarat from Hyderabad

A few weeks after the Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy requested the State government to allot suitable land for the establishment of the World Health Organization Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (WHO GCTM) in Hyderabad, the Union Cabinet has granted approval to establish it at Jamnagar in Gujarat.

The Centre’s shocking decision drew strong criticism from the people of the state. They claimed that the Centre was resorting to step-motherly treatment for Telangana in allocating different projects.

Kishan Reddy recently requested that land be allocated for the establishment of WHO GCTM in a letter to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. In response, Health Minister T Harish Rao stated in a letter to Kishan Reddy that the Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush proposed that the WHO GCTM be established on empty land on the grounds of Indian Drugs and Pharmaceutical Limited (IDPL).

Harish Rao informed that the IDPL land was in the green zone, making it unsuitable for the proposed project. However, the State government will provide the necessary land for the project at no cost in a suitable location.

Furthermore, the State government would provide all assistance in acquiring necessary clearances from State government agencies for the project’s establishment. S.A.M. Rizvi, secretary of the Health, Medical, and Family Welfare department, would serve as a single point of contact for the State government to manage procedures relating to the identification of land and the facilitation of necessary clearances for the project.

Rizvi also addressed a letter to Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, stating that the State government would provide all assistance in obtaining permissions. However, the Union Cabinet decided to locate the project in Jamnagar, disregarding the interests of the people of Telangana.

Upon learning of the project’s relocation to Jamnagar, some netizens criticized the Central government for discriminating against Telangana. Putta Vishnuvardhan Reddy, a netizen, tweeted: Hon’ble @kishanreddybjp garu, a Union Cabinet Minister or a Union Helpless Minister? 3 weeks ago, you posted that the WHO’s Global Centre for Traditional Medicine will be established in #Hyderabad. What transpired in 3 weeks that the Union Cabinet moved it to Gujarat?

This was not the first time the Centre has treated Telangana unfairly. Along with the defence corridor, the Central government did not allocate industrial corridors from Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Warangal, Hyderabad-Vijayawada, and Hyderabad-Nagpur. The defensive corridor was relocated to Uttar Pradesh’s Bundelkhand.

It failed to provide adequate funding for a number of projects in the state, notably the Kakatiya Mega Textile Park in the Warangal district.
