DMK MP: No reservation for OBCs in National Law Universities

Chennai: T.R. Baalu, Senior DMK head, on Saturday said there was no reservation for other backward classes (OBC) in the admission in the National Law Universities (NLU) for the academic year 2020-21.

In a written message to Union Minister for Education Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the DMK head stated there was a clear and intentional infringement of the OBC Reservation Policy in NLUs.

As per Baalu, the Central Educational Institutions (Reservations in Admissions) Act, 2006 and UGC (University Grants Commission) rules order the Universities to actualize 27 percent reservation for OBCs both in admissions and in enrollment.

In any case, in NLUs, it has been completely overlooked regardless of directions to the Vice Chancellors to conform to the rules, said Baalu.

Baalu said that out of 120 seats in the BA-LLB course in NLU, Bengaluru, 93 seats are in the General Category while 18 and nine are for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

He likewise called attention to in June 2020, the executive of National Commission for Backward Classes had guided the University Grants Commission to make a severe move against NLUs flouting obligatory reservation policies for students having a place with OBCs, while NCBC had given direction in such manner.

He was quoted saying: “There is a complete rejection of reservation for OBC candidates.”

Baalu said the NLU, Delhi booking for OBCs is just 22 percent rather than 27 percent.

In spite of these directions, Vice Chancellors of NLUs have wouldn’t follow the OBC reservation standard, Mr. Baalu affirmed, which has put OBC students to a ridiculous difficulty.

The DMK head mentioned Nishank’s own interference and coordinated the UGC and Vice Chancellors of NLUs to execute 27 percent reservation to OBC students for the all India seats just as the State recommended domicile booking for admission in this academic year 2020-21.
