DRDO & Dr. Reddy’s developed covid drug gets approved for emergency use

As covid-19 is attaining a stronger grip on India, the need for newer drugs to fight the virus has increased more than ever. To help in this global battle, the DCGI (Drugs Controller General of India) has approved a drug for emergency use developed by the DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organization) in association with a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company.

The drug is proven to be helpful in trials for treating covid-19 patients. The top drugs controller of India gave the formulation a green signal following clinical trial results that showed its efficacy. The reports mentioned the presence of a particular molecule in the drug that aids in faster recovery of hospitalized patients and also reduces covid infected patients’ dependance on supplemental oxygen.
In the trials, an increased number of patients were found negative for covid-19 in RT-PCR tests after getting treated with the drug.
The DRDO and Dr. Reddy’s produced medicine is available in a powder form sealed in a sachet. It needs to be consumed orally by dissolving the contents in water. It is an anti-covid therapeutic application of the drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG).
The drug that had begun its production phase last year underwent its second round of clinical trials between 2020’s May and October. It was then found to be safe for the 110 covid-19 patients who were a part of it, with notable difference and improvement in their recovery journey.
“Dose-ranging” was conducted in 11 hospitals of India while the third phase of trials took place in 6 hospitals.
Since the country started erupting with covid cases, beating every previous record, there has been a huge outpour of help from across the world with countries and people alike sending aid of all sorts. Oxygen plants, tankers, essential drugs, and money is being sent from different nations to help India fight the covid battle as the healthcare system is drowning with the surge and shortage of treatment entities.
India broke the record of daily deaths with 4,187 fatalities registered today. The numbers have forced states to impose lockdowns and restrictions to control the growing spread of the deadly virus in the second wave. The total covid cases now stand at 2.18 crore as 4.01 lakh new cases were reported.
