Drone/RPA Pilot Training at Telangana State Aviation Academy

The liberalisation of the drone business has resulted in a tremendous increase in demand for the talent and abilities required to pilot drones. Because Telangana is already a forerunner in the drones sector, the Telangana State Aviation Academy (TSAA) has undergone a major overhaul, including the selection of a new Hyderabad-based company as the training partner, the replacement of drones with new versions, and a greater emphasis on working professionals in areas of drone application.

TSAA features one of the country’s largest airspaces for drone training, with a 280-acre flight area and a 920-metre runway, as well as a broad range of small category drones across kinds such as Multirotor, Hexacopter Hybrid Survey Drones, VTOLs, and so on.

TSAA has already completed two new batches of pilot training and is set to complete its third batch with a redesigned strategy and prior experience teaching 70 drone pilots. In a first, the recently completed 2nd batch included only scientific personnel from the National Remote Sensing Centre and ICRISAT, and the scientists were honoured in the presence of Jayesh Ranjan, Prl. Secretary, ITE&C and I&C Department, Government of Telangana.

TSAA already has a long history of training pilots for manned aviation; it has been in operation for seven decades, has seven aircraft and two modern simulators, and has been named the best Flight Training Organization for the past 12 years in a row. The re-invigorated focus of TSAA on drone pilot training aligns with the Telangana Government’s aim to ensure the state remains one of the country’s leading hubs for drone technology.

Drone pilot training is crucial because drone/RPA pilot certification is required to operate a drone/RPA under the legislation of the Government of India, and operating a Drone/RPA without certification is a serious offence punishable by law. Students who complete the TSAA programme will become DGCA certified drone pilots and will be able to legally fly drones in accordance with the Government of India’s Drone Rules 2021. A five-day rigorous hands-on training programme covering drone rules, drone hardware/software internals, drone flying simulators, and field drone flying exercises is included in the training.

As one of the few Flight Training Organizations licenced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to officially run Drone/RPA Pilot Training Programs and grant DGCA approved Drone/RPA Certification, TSAA offers Drone/RPA Pilot training and Drone/RPA Pilot Certification. TSAA is collaborating with Marut Drones, a leading Hyderabad-based drone startup, to implement a high-quality training programme that includes highly trained teachers, advanced equipment, and DGCA-compliant processes.

“Telangana has been a prominent supporter for the adoption of drone technology, and knows that the availability of skilled pilots is the most crucial for the advancement of this sector,” said Jayesh Ranjan, Principal Secretary, Government of Telangana. As a result, the TSAA is already creating new alliances and assuring the best quality of training programme to ensure Telangana remains a leader in drone technology.”
