Durgam Cheruvu Cable Bridge works in full swing

Hyderabad: The 754.38-meter long Durgam Cheruvu Cable Bridge, one of the biggest cable bridges in the country was being constructed with modernized technology in speedy manner at an estimated cost of Rs 184 crore.

All the works are to be performed at a height of 20m and above, from the ground level which is reducing the productivity. The bridge construction now needs saddles (tailor made system) for upper pylon works, which is varying from 5 to 7 MT. For this erection, we need to work only on Saturday night or Sunday keeping the higher capacity crane on the road by blocking the commuters from NCC office to Inorbit mall.

Works or movement of equipment are bound to be performed between 11pm to 6am. Though the concrete is ready in the day shift, segment casting is mostly done in night shift due to restriction in transit mixer movement. Major concrete over 100 cum are being performed only on Saturday night as the traffic restriction are directly hampering the concreting activity, subsequently the launching works. 22 number of pours of concrete are to be performed only on weekends, which is resulting in delay of subsequent activities.

Currently, the parallel activities are complete. The project is now largely that of pre-cast segment erection, which has to be performed with a predecessor activity only. Pre-cast segments are to be transported only between 12AM to 4AM, whereas, the Contractor can take 3 segments per day. This is impacting large time duration on launching works. The project location lies in hilly terrain thereby having tremendous levelling of profile.

This bridge is the 3 rd largest in the world and the longest in span in India, the earlier two bridges were completed in 6 years & 5 years respectively. The exposed surface of the bridge is in half fish belly  curved unlike the regular segment which is also reducing the productivity.(NSS)
