During Sankranti, Telangana excise dept nets Rs 419.11 crore from liquor sales

During the Sankranti festival season this year, the Telangana Excise wing recorded liquor sales worth approximately Rs 419.11 crore across the state in just three days.

According to the figures, the festival was the best season of sales for the Excise Department in 2023. According to the Excise Department, 4.29 lakh cases of liquor IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor) and 5.61 lakh cases of beer were sold to liquor shops from the depots on January 13, 14, and 16. The depots were closed on January 15, as per officials.

According to officials, the depots were constantly under pressure during the three days of the festival due to the increased demand for more liquor brands sky-rocketed.

On a typical working day, sales would be around Rs 75 crore, but on January 13, 14, and 16, sales were Rs 153.71 crore, Rs 113.09 crore, and Rs 152.31 crore, respectively.

On January 13, 1.62 lakh cases of IMFL liquor and 1.82 lakh cases of beer worth Rs 153.71 crore were sold, while on January 14, 1.14 lakh cases of IMFL and 1.53 lakh cases of beer worth Rs 113.09 crore were sold, according to the department officials. On January 15, a total of 1.53 lakh cases of IMFL and 2.26 lakh cases of beer were sold, totaling Rs 152.31 lakh.

The state government receives 50% of the excise duty on beer MRP, while the excise duty on other liquor is estimated to be between 80% and 85%. With a strong start in 2023, the Excise Department expects to earn more than Rs 40,000 crore in revenue this year, exceeding the income in 2022.

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) set a new record of sorts by safely transporting 2.82 crore passengers between January 10 and 20 during the Sankranti festival season. This festive season’s patronage increased by 12 lakh passengers when compared to 2022.

During Sankranti, a total of Rs.165.46 crore was earned in just 11 days, which was approximately Rs.62.29 crore more than the previous year.
