Early Bird Scheme nets GHMC Rs 742.41 crore this year

The amount of property tax collected under the Early Bird scheme in GHMC has reached an all-time high this year, with the majority of tax collected through online payment methods.

As part of the GHMC’s Early Bird scheme, it has collected a record amount of Rs 742.41 crore. GHMC collected Rs 100.38 crore on Saturday alone, the last day of the scheme, the most property tax it has ever collected in a single day.

A 5 per cent rebate on property tax was offered to building owners under the Early Bird scheme that started on April 1 and ended on April 30. Its target for this financial year was Rs 600 crore, but the collections surpassed it, setting a new record.

Furthermore, this year’s collection was only for one month only, from April 1 to April 30, whereas last year, the period was extended to May 31 due to the second wave of COVID-19.

The receipts through the scheme this year have soared by 95% compared to five years ago.

Owners of properties who pay their dues within the first month of the financial year are eligible for a 5 per cent rebate.

This jump in collections is attributed to the online mutation and assessment system introduced by the State government, whereby the mutation fee is collected, and a Property Tax Identification Number is assigned at the time of the registration itself, thereby eliminating any manual intervention by way of bill collectors.

With an 88 crore collection, Serilingampally is unsurprisingly at the top of all the civic bodies in terms of revenue. Jubilee Hills follows with Rs. 75 crore, followed by Khairatabad with Rs. 61 crore.

The lowest collection was in Chandrarayangutta circle, at Rs. 2.25 crore, followed by Falaknuma at Rs. 2.73 crore.
