ECI Directs Refund of Confiscated Non-Poll Money in Telangana

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed Telangana’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Vikas Raj, to refund confiscated non-poll money after district grievance committees have given their approval.

This decision was made in response to complaints received by the ECI, which indicated that the cash seizures had nothing to do with the impending elections.

On Monday, the ECI encouraged the state’s electoral apparatus to fix any outstanding concerns during a review of preparations for the November 30 elections. The nomination filing process is about to begin, and it is critical that these difficulties get handled as soon as possible.

Senior deputy Election Commissioner Nitesh Kumar Vyas and Pankaj Srivastava, Director of Expenditure at the ECI, both based in New Delhi, participated in a video conference with District Electoral Officers (DEOs), Superintendents of Police (SPs), and Commissioners of Police (CPs) from districts including Nalgonda, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Jangaon, Warangal, Khammam, and Hyderabad.

During this virtual discussion, Mahesh Bhagawat, Telangana’s Expenditure Monitoring Nodal Officer, and Sanjay Kumar Jain, Telangana’s Police Nodal Officer, briefed the ECI with insights into the steps implemented thus far.

Furthermore, CEO Lokesh Kumar provided a summary of the preparations, including security measures, polling worker facilities, and complaint resolution methods.

The meeting also discussed, among other things, the installation of control rooms, strict adherence to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), identification of sensitive regions for future army deployment, and the organization of media certification and monitoring committees.

The ECI hopes that by adopting these actions, it would be able to ensure a smooth and transparent electoral process in Telangana while preserving the values of free and fair elections.

Please keep in mind that “non-poll money” refers to cash or funds confiscated but unrelated to the impending elections.
