Environmental pollution shortening longevity of Indians, says scientist

Hyderabad: “There are many environmental issues in the country like air pollution, water pollution, garbage and pollution of the natural environment. Nature was also causing some drastic effects on India”, observed Dr. V.Venugopal, former Director, RC & I Group, Board of Research in Nuclear Science, Mumbai.

Interacting with the students of School of Science, GITAM Deemed to be University, on Wednesday, Dr V. Venugopal deplored that the people in the country have on control over the environment. As a result, waterborne diseases are caused by water that is contaminated by human and animal urine and feces that contain pathogenic micro organisms. He pointed out that while Indians average age is limited to 64 years, those in the USA live up to 85 years.

“Radiation is everywhere including in minerals in the soil that emit alpha and beta particles as well as some gamma rays. Sunlight also has ionizing ultraviolet radiation. Non-ionizing radiation is mostly harmless”, he said while answering a questing on mobile radiation.

Earlier, Prof. G.A. Rama Rao, Principal, School of Science, has felicitated Dr V. Venugopal. Dr G. Rambabu, HoD, Chemistry Department, also spoke. The B.Sc. students of the Collecge participated in the interactive session and expressed happiness to have an opportunity to interact with BARC former Director.

GITAM National Service Scheme students Singireddy Venkatsai Reddy and Kambhapati Ananya bagged first prize in poster presentation in National Integration Camp recently held at Narsapur. The duo had designed a poster on national integration and explained about the theme behind it. Venkatsai also performed Telangana folk dance ‘Pedda Puli’ and received appreciation from the audience. Earlier, Venkatsai participated in Republic Day Parade-2018 at New Delhi on January 26.

Prof. N. Siva Prasad, Pro Vice-Chancellor, GITAM, Prof Y. Lakshman Kumar, Dean & Director, GHBS and NSS Coordinators appreciated the students on their achievement. (NSS)
