EU Announces New Covid 19 Vaccine Campaign Goal, Secures 1.8 Billion Vaccines Supply

With the new wave of Coronavirus hitting the world, the European Commission is speeding up the vaccination programme to prevent any more loss. European Union (EU) expects to vaccinate 70 percent of their population by the end of July.

EU Moves The Vaccination Goal Date By Two Months

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently announced the new goals to vaccinate 70 percent of the adult population by the European Union. She made the announcement after visiting Pfizer’s vaccine plant in Puurs, Belgium where the vaccine has been under production.

Leyen moved the deadline from late September to the end of July this year to vaccinate people across the European Union. She said that BioNTech-Pfizer are making enormous efforts to accelerate the delivery of the vaccines. Following this, she is confident that they will have enough vaccine doses to vaccinate at least 70 percent of the adult population.

She further commended that two joint partners as “strong and reliable suppliers” for Covid 19 vaccine.

EU’s Vaccination Campaign Is Going Smooth

Talking about the vaccination programme in the European Union, she said that the vaccination camapign is on track. She said that they have already delivered 150 million doses and 123 million vaccinations have been deployed. This makes the bloc amongst the top three in terms of Covid 19 vaccines across the world after the United States of America and China.

Leyen confirmed that the commission is close to concluding a deal with BioNTech and Pfizer to supply a total of 1.8 billion additional vaccine doses for 2022 and 2023. She said that the deal will ensure that they have enough booster shots which will increase everyone’s immunity against the Coronavirus. And it will help them to deal with any Covid variant that might escape the vaccination.

Furthermore, the European Medicines Agency has approved increasing the site’s production capacity by 20 percent. This would make it one of the biggest vaccine fill and finish sites in Europe.
