Fine imposed on D-Mart outlet in Hyderabad for charging Rs 3.50 for carry bags

D-Mart outlet in the city has been penalized by the Hyderabad Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission (CRDC) for charging consumers for carrying bags.

In response to a petition filed by V Narasimha Murthy reporting he was charged Rs 3.50 for their logo-printed carry bags after he bought Rs 479 at the Hyderguda branch in December 2019, the commission asked the retailer to compensate the consumer and return Rs 3.50 it had collected.

Moreover, it stated that no payment is required for supplying carry bags.

In the event that the business fails to comply with court orders within 45 days, it will be liable for 18 percent interest.

It is not the first time DMart has been fined for charging consumers for carrying bags. A consumer welfare fund was also fined Rs. 50,000 by the commission earlier for charging extra for carrying bags in addition to compensating the complainant.

The cost of carrying bags varies from Rs.3 to Rs.15 depending on the retailer. Using the customer to promote their business, they print their company names on the carry bags.

In a written statement last year, D’Mart claimed that the plaintiffs’ allegations were unsubstantiated. Nonetheless, there are branded and unbranded bags. The customer has the option of taking them or not.

It was decided by the Consumer Commission that the claims were irrelevant. There is a special counter at the entrance where customers are asked to bring a carry bag.

However, according to the Plastic‌ Management‌ Rules, ‌ 2011 handbags are not allowed to be given away for free.

Nevertheless, based on the amendments notified on March 27, 2018, the Consumer Commission made it free for consumers. The rules are the same as ever before.
