“Free fuel for all Neerajs”- Petrol pump owner’s tribute to Neeraj Chopra’s gold

Celebrating the spirit of victory with Neeraj Chopra winning a gold medal for India in Tokyo Olympics 2020, a petrol station in Gujarat is distributing free fuel to people named “Neeraj”.

Little do the “Neeraj”s of Bharuch area knew on Sunday that they were going to be surprised with petrol and diesel at no cost, just due to the name they possess.

The feast for Neerajs started when a petrol pump owner named Ayub Pathan announced the reward in light of the recent win brought by the Indian javelin thrower. As such, he offered fuel worth Rs 501 for free at his SP Petroleum branch in Netrang town for every Neeraj who could prove his name with a valid identification card.

This offer lasted for two days and ended on Monday evening, drawing surprise from many and pleasure from the name bearers who availed it.

A proud Mr Pathan said that his actions were a tribute to Neeraj Chopra and the victory he brought to India after several years of thirst for the individual gold medal in athletics.

“To pay tribute to Neeraj Chopra, who won a gold medal for India at Tokyo Games, we had launched a scheme for those named Neeraj. Petrol is being given for free worth ₹ 501 when people bring an ID proof with them…. We started this two-day scheme on Sunday,” he said.

A total of 30 people had benefited from the scheme, Mr Pathan added.

Speaking about the offer and his thoughts before utilizing it, one of the recipients of the scheme said he had believed it to be a hoax call. Upon reaching the petrol pump, he realized that they were actually being given the fuel for free.

Opening India’s kitty for the first time ever, Neeraj Chopra set records on Saturday after winning gold in track, becoming the nation’s first person to do so at the Olympics. He sat on the top spot with a brilliant javelin throw of 87.58 meters.

With this, Mr Chopra comes only second to Abhinav Bindra to win an individual gold medal at the Olympics. The debutant youngster this year has won gold in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and even the Olympics now.

This year turned out to be the best for India since the inception of the international sports league as the country won 7 medals in total. It had won 6 medals in London Olympics 2012.
