Get a look at an Egyptian mummy in Hyderabad for only Rs 10

It doesn’t come off as a surprise that everyone has always had a fascination with mummies. This ancient practice is still being researched, with questions ranging from how and why they are buried that way to historical significance.

According to what we know, wealthy Egyptians back in the day arranged for their bodies to be preserved after death in order to keep their souls safe. These preserved bodies are known as mummies that were buried in rich coffins, often surrounded by gold and jewels.

While most people believe that these mummies are to be seen only in Egypt or in movies, a lesser-known fact is that there is one mummy right in the heart of our city.

The mummified remains of Princess Naishu are housed on the first floor of the Telangana State Museum in Public Gardens, Nampally, and are said to be the only mummy in south India.

She is thought to be at least 2,100 to 2,400 years old and is believed to have lived during the Ptolemic period between 300 BC and 100 BC. It is also said that she is the daughter of the sixth Pharaoh of Egypt.

She was about 25 years old when she died and was possibly the daughter of Ptolemy VI Philometor. Her mummy was recently moved from an airtight glass to a nitrogen chamber following several attempts of restoration.

In 1920, Princess Nishu’s mummy was brought to Hyderabad as a gift for the last Nizam Osman Ali Khan by Nazeer Nawaz Jung, the son-in-law of his predecessor.

The museum is open every day except for Fridays and public holidays from 10:30 am to 5 pm. The entry fee for adults is Rs 10 and for children it is Rs 5.
