GHMC begins installation of portable immersion ponds for Ganesh Chaturthi

In preparation for Ganesh Chaturthi, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has started installing portable immersion ponds throughout the city.

Portable, prefabricated, fiber-reinforced, plastic ponds have already been constructed in some of the identified locations. These unique ponds can be assembled and set up at 24 locations across the city, filled with water, and then dismantled after the immersion of idols is complete.

At NTR Stadium and Amberpet Stadium, two such ponds were being constructed on Tuesday. According to officials, the new concept will allow them to immerse idols during various festivals with greater flexibility.

According to GHMC officials, these ponds will also be used for Vijaya Dashami and Bathukamma festivals in addition to helping ensure the city’s water bodies are not negatively affected.

Traditionally, idols are immersed in lakes and ponds of the city, but in recent years the civic body has carved out artificial ponds, known as baby ponds, alongside the water bodies. During immersion, these artificial ponds are filled with water and later emptied. Despite this, officials said the new concept has an advantage over baby ponds in terms of portability and ease of assembling and dismantling.

Around seven to fourteen staff members will be deployed at these portable ponds to assist people who wish to immerse Ganesh idols there. Fogging will also be carried out at these locations by entomology workers.

It is also worth noting that the Khairatabad Ganesh Utsav Committee announced earlier that it would make the eco-friendly Ganesha idol with organic colors and clay for Ganesh Chaturthi.
