GHMC to set up 30 Secondary Collection and Transfer Points

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) plans to establish 30 Secondary Collection and Transfer Points (SC&TP) at strategic locations throughout the city as part of its ongoing efforts to improve sanitation. Unlike the existing transfer stations, which were built on large land parcels, the new SC&TPs will be built on 100 square metres or larger.

Currently, waste collected from households, roads, and other public places is transported to transfer stations, where it is recycled at the Jawahar Nagar dump yard.

SC&TPs, on the other hand, is expected to reduce the load on existing transfer stations while also speeding up the waste disposal process.

The GHMC is also modernising traditional transfer stations to handle municipal solid waste more efficiently by introducing closed containerised vehicles, i.e. hermetically sealed containers coupled with hook loader vehicles.

The new SC&TPs and containerized vehicles will address issues such as garbage being spread near transfer stations, leachate, soil contamination, road spillages, and hazards caused by garbage being transported in open vehicles.

These new procedures are being implemented by the civic body in order to dispose of the municipal solid waste, which has increased in GHMC limits over the years, scientifically and efficiently. From 2,500 metric tonnes of garbage generated per day in the GHMC limits in 2015, the city now generates 6,500 metric tonnes of waste every day.

Meanwhile, another recent initiative to improve city cleanliness is the deployment of additional Swachh Auto Tippers, which are used for door-to-door garbage collection from households.

In addition to efficient municipal solid waste management, efforts are underway to expand recycling initiatives by establishing two more Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste recycling plants, one in each of the city’s southern and northern districts. The municipal government has issued a request for proposals to companies interested in establishing recycling plants.
