GMR authorized to operate Hyderabad airport until 2068

As part of the agreement with the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL), a subsidiary of GMR Infrastructure Limited (GIL), is now authorized to operate Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) until March 2068, thus extending their contract for another 30 years, from March 2038 to March 2068.

GHIAL states that the extension is a part of the 2005 Concession Agreement, which made Rajiv Gandhi International Airport the first greenfield airport built in a public-private partnership.

The RGIA, which began operations in March 2008, has reached its 14th anniversary this year, and it currently has a capacity of 2.1 cr passengers. The airport is currently undergoing a major expansion after which it will be able to accommodate 3.4 cr passengers annually.

According to GHIAL, the airport’s master plan will create the flexibility for it to handle over 100 million passengers per year.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is the only airport in India that offers an e-boarding solution along with being the country’s fourth busiest.

As a result of a major expansion, the airport will soon expand its capacity to 34 million passengers per year, making it a gateway to South and Central India. The airport’s ultimate capacity can be increased to more than 100 million passengers per year in phases, GIL said, adding that it can handle 1.5 lakh tonnes of cargo per year.

GMR Group operates airports in Delhi Hyderabad and Cebu in the Philippines and is the second-largest private airport operator in Asia with over 18.9 crore passengers per year. Recently, it acquired the rights to develop and operate the Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia.

In addition to Goa and Bhogapuram airports in India, the Group is also building a Greek airport, Crete airport.
