Herd Immunity suggestive to appear in August against covid-19: Safdarjung Hospital MS

New Delhi: According to the Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung hospital, the infamous herd immunity is likely to appear in people in August, after the period of spike in cases. The surge in coronavirus cases will continue till the trajectory reaches the peak in June or July.

As recently stated by the AIIMS Director Prof. Randeep Guleria regarding the highest number of cases to get recorded in either June or July, the MS at Safdarjung Hospital said that the corona virus is constructing its own stream of viruses and the peak will most probably be seen during this timeframe. “It seems after this peak, it is likely that herd immunity may develop and we can see it in August,” added Arora.

When enough herd immunity has been produced in the society, it is then likely for susceptible people, especially the elderly and people having co-morbidities to become safe, according to reports.

Regarding the abrupt increase in coronavirus positive cases, Arora said that the virus is mutating and it is not concentrated or static in any particular region, instead it has spread in many parts of the country.

According to data from the Health Ministry, the sharpest spike, of 5,242 new cases, was reported in the past 24 hours, which took India’s toll of coronavirus to 96,169. The Ministry said, from these, 56,316 are active cases while at least 36,823 people have been cured from the disease. And, 157 deaths were also reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total count of deaths to 3,029.

When asked about the social norms and activities after the relaxations of the lockdown, Arora urged that it is utmost required for the people to follow physical distancing religiously and not to look at this relaxation as a green flag to renew your normal social interactive life. “Not more than five people should assemble. In fact, if possible only three people should assemble and they should maintain sufficient distance between them,” said Arora.

According to the research done on corona virus by different countries, it is found to be getting mutated rapidly in connection to the disease, although the studies do not conclude on how these mutations affect virulence, transmissibility and mortality.

Arora insisted that in the absence of a vaccine, it is important people should maintain hygiene and follow other guidelines associated with the prevention of the disease like wearing of masks and the protocol in absence of the lockdown as well.
