Hit Badly by COVID-19 Pandemic, Bengal Couple Sells New-born Daughter for Rs 4,000

Parents of an eight-month-old girl sold her off for just Rs 4,000 in West Bengal’s Midnapore locale because of the extreme monetary crisis in the midst of the continuing COVID-19 pandemic that hit the country eight months back, police said.

Police stated preliminary investigation revealed that the family was facing acute poverty during the COVID-19 pandemic that began livelihood opportunity emergency with repeated lockdowns since March.

During the questioning, the guardians conceded that it turned out to be truly hard for them to get by owing to practically no-salary.

The episode was reported from the Harijon Pally region in the locale.

Later on, the police said the uncle of the new-born child some way or another managed Rs 4,000 and got her back home on Thursday from the individual she was sold to. He gave over the infant to the authorities of the state child welfare department.

After important clinical tests, the child was kept in Vidyasagar Girl’s Home in Midnapore town. Afterward, the authorities of Kotwali police headquarters arrested the guardians for questioning.
