Hyderabad: Church construction begins at new Secretariat

The foundation stone for the construction of a church within the Telangana Secretariat was laid. As a part of the ground-breaking ceremony for the new church, Bishop Reverend AC Soloman performed special prayers.

Using the model of equal importance for all communities, Bishop Soloman said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is safeguarding the secular fabric of Telangana.

Since the Secretariat is currently under construction, the church foundation stone ceremony was relatively low key. As part of this project, the state government has allocated Rs.1.5 crore and reserved 500 square yards for the church on the premises.

Bishop Solomon had expressed his gratitude to the State government for covering the entire construction cost and granting the site for the new church.

Rajeshwar Rao praised Telangana’s Ganga Jamuna Tehzeeb and its brotherhood, adding that the Chief Minister accorded equal importance to all faiths and cultures.

According to him, the government has come up with numerous welfare programs for Christian minorities and is doing its best to provide financial assistance to Christian women under the Shaadi Mubarak program.

MLCs praised the Chief Minister for building a spacious and beautiful church within the new Secretariat premises. Employees of the Secretariat also thanked the government for constructing the church in such a sprawling area.

In the months following the demolition of two mosques at the Secretariat in July 2020, a controversy had arisen over the re-building of places of worship.

In addition to all the protests and the writ petitions, renowned lawyers had also petitioned at the Telangana high court in order to have the mosques rebuilt immediately.

As part of the state government’s commitment to building a tolerant and democratic environment, various places of worship will be constructed on the newly constructed Secretariat campus.
