Hyderabad: Experts predict a harsh summer ahead

With an unusually warm February this year, in Hyderabad and other parts of India, experts predict a harsh summer ahead. Several north Indian states have already recorded higher-than-normal temperatures. In Hyderabad, a maximum temperature of 35.8 degree Celsius was recorded at Begumpet Airport on February 13, which is three degrees higher than the normal temperature of 32.5 degrees Celsius.

According to data from the Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad, the highest temperature recorded in February 2022 was 25 degrees Celsius, but the temperature in various parts of the city exceeded 35 degrees Celsius in February 2023. For example, on Wednesday, Shaikpet had a maximum temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius, while Begumpet had a maximum temperature of 35.9 degrees Celsius.

Various parts of the state are also experiencing higher-than-normal temperatures in February, indicating the arrival of early summer.

The El Nino climate pattern, which is associated with extreme heat waves and weak monsoons, is expected to emerge around this summer season, according to the most recent global meteorological models.

“From February 11, day temperatures will gradually begin rising in the city, thus marking the beginning of summer season. However, nights and early mornings will remain cool until February last week,” says Tarani Balaji, known as Telangana Weatherman on Twitter.

During the last nine years, the annual maximum temperatures were highest in 2016 and lowest in 2021.

According to a report by the Telangana State Development Planning Society, temperature trends have slightly decreased in the last three years due to the current La Nina conditions (TSDPS).

Weather and climate patterns are affected by El Nino. In India, it is associated with drought or weak monsoons. La Nina, on the other hand, is associated with intense monsoons and colder winters. It has a cooling effect.

Balaji predicts that this year’s summer will be hot and humid due to the El Nino event. “The track of summer cyclones decides the intensity of heat waves and pre-monsoon thunderstorms, which we can’t say now itself. As of now, we expect some strong heat, unlike last few years,” he added.
