Hyderabad gears up for Ramadan 2024

As the commencement of Ramadan approaches on March 12, vendors at Charminar anticipate a surge in sales leading up to the holy month. Subhan Ahmed, a hawker specializing in earrings, necklaces, and accessories, noted that while sales are currently steady, an increase in footfall is expected during Ramadan, particularly after Iftar. Ahmed expressed optimism that sales would see a slight improvement in the coming days.

shiva, an accessories seller, reported a steady rise in customer footfall and successful sales over the past 3-4 days. With Ramadan on the horizon, he hopes for decent sales during the upcoming period. Even tourists and visitors at Charminar are showing interest in attar, with some customers attracted to colorful bottles and trying out various perfumes before making a selection.

Mohammed Ishaq, an attar vendor, highlighted the diverse range of fragrances available, including Jannatul Firdaus, Musk, and Oud. He sells these fragrances in quantities of 50, 100, and 200 ml bottles, with prices ranging from Rs 50 to 200, depending on the chosen fragrance.

On the pavement adjacent to the Mecca Masjid, vendors display a wide array of Abayas (veils) and accessories. Ehsan Ali, an Abaya seller, mentioned that the prices of Abayas range from Rs 400 to 800, depending on size and make. He expects sales to gradually increase, as many women tend to purchase these items in bulk.

Regarding preparations ahead of Ramadan, MA Khadeer Siddiqui, the Superintendent of the Mecca Masjid, shared details of the initiatives taken. Based on the recommendation of Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi to the GHMC Commissioner, shades have been raised in the masjid’s courtyard to provide comfort to worshippers. Additionally, various maintenance activities, such as whitewashing of the compound wall and minor repairs in the toilets and wazukhana, have been assigned to contractors.

Siddiqui mentioned that the deputy general manager of the water works department has repaired and whitewashed small and large water sumps, filling them with fresh water for worshippers to use. The Secretary and Commissioner of the minority department have also provided necessary items, including new prayer mats and other housekeeping articles, for the upcoming year 2024-25, concluding the preparations for the holy month.
