Hyderabad: GHMC plans to curb dog menace by hiring private veterinarians

As part of its efforts to control the dog menace in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is increasing the number of Animal Birth Control operations and Anti Rabies Vaccinations (ABCs and ARVs) in the city.

Besides the 16 veterinarians already on staff, the corporation announced on Wednesday that eight more would be hired.

The name of the ‘Dog catching squad’ has been renamed ‘GHMC dog birth control unit’.

A total of 20 dog-catching vehicles will be added to the current fleet of 30. The GHMC workers will extend their operations into the evenings to catch dogs.

Other measures being taken to reduce dog bites in the city include the distribution of pamphlets, serving notices to meat shop owners and hotels, and conducting awareness campaigns with the Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), slum and town-level federations, and self-help groups.

To that end, the GHMC issued notices to approximately 4001 establishments, including meat shops and hotels, instructing management not to dispose of garbage in public places.

Over 2.28 lakh students from 1066 schools, as well as 1111 RWAs, slums, and town-level federations, have participated in awareness programs.
