Hyderabad: In midst of a sweltering heat, Nehru Zoo prepares to protect animals

As summer arrives in the state, officials at the Nehru Zoological Park in the city are hard at work putting in place the summer protocol to protect the animals from the sweltering heat. Summer in Hyderabad can be extremely hot, with temperatures consistently exceeding 30°C and reaching as high as 45°C.

With temperatures rising over the last week, preparations and precautionary measures are being put in place to protect the animals from sunstroke. The measures, according to Zoo Park Curator S Rajashekhar, will help the animals avoid summer stress and heat strokes between March and June.

Air coolers are being installed in the animal enclosures for monkeys, tigers, lions, jaguars, and leopards as part of the measures. These are in addition to the air conditioners and exhaust fans that have been installed in the nocturnal animal house.

“In all enclosures, mist sprayers, sprinklers, and small rain guns have been installed, and animals can cool themselves under these,” he said.

Other methods for cooling animal enclosures include ‘thunga grass,’ ‘gunny cloths,’ and ‘Kashkash thattis.’

“The thattis and grass are watered at least four times per day to keep the enclosures cool,” officials stated.

Green shade nets have been hung from the roofs of the bird enclosures and the windows of the night houses. Shelters for herbivorous animals are being built. Seasonal fruits such as watermelon, muskmelon, and citrus fruits are given to the animals to help them maintain body temperature, especially to the apes, monkeys, birds, and bears. They are also given plenty of safe drinking water, as well as water troughs placed throughout the zoo for free-roaming animals and birds. Monkeys and bears receive frozen fruits as well.

To protect the animals from summer stress, Glucon-D, electrolyte powder, vitamin C, and B-Complex supplements are also provided.
