Hyderabad mosque converts into free-of-cost covid care centre

In the spirit of helping covid patients amidst the difficult times, a mosque situated in Rajendranagar of Hyderabad has converted its place of worship to a full-fledged covid isolation centre with round the clock services.  

The mosque, Masjid-e-Muhammadi, with a two-storeyed building attached to it is all set to house covid-19 patients who come from weaker sections or do not have enough space at their homes to isolate. As such, with the help of voluntary organizations, the mosque is operating with 40 beds, medical services, oxygen facilities, and a triaging system for give first-line covid treatment.  

There are 20 classrooms in the school building that can accommodate 2 to 3 patients in each room. Arrangements have also been made for a separate pharmacy, rooms for doctors, rest area, casualty department and triaging. There is a separate restroom for men and women on every floor.  

The initiative is completely free of cost to fulfil the purpose it was started for, its organizers stressed.

The Helping Hand Foundation is currently managing the facility that was officially launched on Monday, 24th May. It is functioning with the support of Rs. 75 lakhs that covers the costs for the next 6 months given by The Helping Hands Rotary Trust through Rotary Club of Hyderabad Deccan and Support for Educational and Economic Development (SEED). 

Speaking about the uniqueness of the facility, Mujtaba Hasan Askari of Helping Hand Foundation said that it will provide round-the-clock ambulance services. Any patient who requires their service will be picked from their homes directly and shifted to a government or private hospitals if the need arises, he added.  

Equipped with covid essential medical services, a full-time physiotherapist and a dietician as well, the facility has 50 staff members led by Dr P Shafi, MD, Internal Medicine, DM (Cardiology). To treat patients and give the best care possible, 4 doctors, 4 nurses and 4 bedside caregivers will work shift wise. Each shift will extend for 6 hours with sanitation workers and general helpers in this mission.  

The terrible times that people around the world are suffering made the organization take charge of the initiative and begin providing care to covid patients with free oxygen through Mission O2, VVSN Raju, President of the Rotary Club of Hyderabad Deccan said.  

As financially weaker sections of the society are finding it extremely difficult to afford the expensive treatment and use isolation centres for protecting themselves and their family members, Syed Mazhar Hussaini, Executive Director, SEED, USA, said they decided to offer adequate quarantine facilities and other services to asymptomatic and moderate covid infected patients in the city.
