Hyderabad: New Secretariat complex scheduled to be inaugurated on Feb 17

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao is scheduled to inaugurate the newly constructed Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat on February 17, on the occasion of the former’s birthday, Roads and Buildings Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy said in a statement.

The seven-storeyed Secretariat building, which is located near Hussain Sagar Lake, is nearing completion. The building, with a built-up area of over 7 lakh sq.ft. and all modern amenities, costs more than Rs 600 crore to construct.

On June 27, 2019, Chandrashekhar Rao laid the foundation for the new Secretariat complex. However, the work was put on hold due to pending cases in the High Court as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Following the dismissal of petitions by opposition parties and activists by the court, construction began in December 2020 and was completed in two years.

The old Secretariat was demolished in 2020 as part of CM KCR’s plans to build a brand-new secretariat. Despite opposition from many environmentalists and heritage activists who suggested that the existing buildings be repaired instead, the Chief Minister proceeded with his plans. CM KCR had earlier said that the new Secretariat should bring glory to the country and it should have a “wonderful ornamental form with all its grandeur”. He also stated that it should be built in such a way that it can withstand the elements for decades to come.

According to officials, approximately 90% of the work in all wings of the new building has been completed, and the remaining 10% of work, including dome construction and some blocks, will be completed by the end of this month.

Soon after the construction work is finished, the Roads and Buildings Department will turn over the premises to the General Administration Department, which will finalise the chambers to be assigned to the Ministers, Secretaries, and other offices for interior work.

According to Prashant Reddy, work on vehicle parking lots and other structures is currently underway and may take some time to complete.
