Hyderabad Police asks Google to remove 221 fake loan apps

The Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have written to multinational technology giant Google about 221 illegal online loan apps, requesting that they be removed from the Google Play Store.

Following several complaints of harassment and cheating by online loan apps, the social media team identified several apps, particularly on the Play Store. According to the police, an investigation into several online loan app cases revealed that 221 apps were illegal, with many of them also being fake, after detailed verification of many of them.

These organizers are creating such illegal and fake apps and placing them on Play Store, where unsuspecting users download them believing them to be genuine a senior official said.

As a precaution, the police briefed Google two days ago about these apps and listed the reasons why they should be removed from the medium. Previously, we identified some illegal and fake apps that did not comply with Reserve Bank of India guidelines and requested that Google remove them. We will continue to identify such apps and bring them to Google management’s attention, the official said.

Telangana’s cybercrime center saves Rs 15.47 crore from con artists.

Since its inception on June 19, last year, the Telangana Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (T4C) managed by the Telangana police has been able to hold Rs 15.47 crore that was swindled from citizens in various types of cyber frauds in the State.

As soon as a complaint is received, the center follows up with nodal officers, and the defrauded money is successfully withheld by freezing the suspect’s bank account, a police official said.

Since its inception, the center has been operating around the clock, responding to citizen complaints about cyber fraud made to the National Cyber Crime Helpline Number – 1930. All reported financial cyber frauds are entered into an online portal known as the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System (CFCFRMS). All banks and financial intermediaries have nodal offices that conduct a quick review and prevent victims’ money from reaching the fraudsters.
