Hyderabad police fined over 16000 vehicles for number plates, other violations

Over 16000 cases have been booked against traffic violators in the last seven days, as part of a special drive against number plate violations, noise pollution, tinted windows, and stickers.

According to the Hyderabad traffic police, 9,387 vehicles have been cited for violation of number plates, 3,270 for noise pollution, and 4,280 for violation of black films/stickers since March 20 totalling up to16937 vehicles.

There had been a special drive started a week ago by the traffic police against tampering with number plates in the register, altering number plates without permits, using temporary registration plates even a month after purchase, installing modified silencers and horns, adding black films to automobile windows, and applying stickers revealing their profession, occupation, or official designation.

Several motor vehicles, both cars and motorbikes, had been spotted by traffic police in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act in the city.

In addition to contributing to traffic violations, these offences also constituted criminal activity, according to the police.

Additionally, officers have warned that number plates carrying words like ‘police’, ‘government vehicle’, ‘corporator’, ‘Press’, ‘Army’, and ‘MP’ are in violation of sections 50, 51, and 52 of the Motor Vehicle Rules and will be treated seriously.

It had also been stated that, on license plates, only the most basic registration markings and digits are allowed. Images, letters, or other fancy lettering are also not permitted.

According to a ruling by the Supreme Court on 27 April 2012, materials obstructing visibility – such as black screens, sun shades, and curtains – are prohibited.
